The mission of Pawns2Kynzs is bigger than just creating better chess players. The goal is to develop better thinkers- young men prepared to make their next best move. Pawns 2 Kynzs uses chess as a framework for life.
Pawn → Position → Decisions → Development → Promotion → Kynz.
Young men learn that their current position does not determine their final destination. Just as every move on a chessboard creates consequences and possibilities, the decisions they make shape the positions they encounter in life.
Through the game of chess, personal coaching, mentoring, community service, workforce experience opportunities, and other fun eduicational activities; the young men learn to:
Think before they act
Consider the positive intentions of others
Be patient and forgive error
Be civil and supportive of fellow students
Establish personal boundaries and standards
Manage emotions, think before reacting
Recognize consequences
Develop their strengths
Make purposeful decisions about their future
In short, they become better teammates and future citizens.Through this valuable experience, men learn both a moral code and how to use intellect, reasoning, and critical thinking to find solutions, not just in chess, but also in life.
Through chess and the other activities that we do, I learn discipline, patience, enjoy competition, and how to be proud of my efforts, whether I win or lose.
The game of chess goes far beyond learning how the pieces move because the chessboard is a classroom for life.

Coach Leon Washington III, known to the participants as "Coach Leon" is the primary facilitator, educator, mentor, and chess instructor for Pawns2Kynz He is the founder of H.A.I.R. – Helping All InnerCity Read. His approach to chess goes far beyond learning how the pieces move, he uses the chessboard as a simulation for life.
Through chess, Coach Leon teaches young people to think ahead, recognize consequences, control their emotions, solve problems, make better decisions, and take responsibility for their moves. Every piece, position, win, loss, and lesson becomes an opportunity to connect strategy on the board to choices in real life.
His philosophy is simple: When you are the board, all you see is options. When young people learn to slow down, think before they move, and develop a strategy on the board, they begin developing those same habits away from it.
An earned experience that includes professional interaction, skill development, and practical life skills, like car maintenance and use of complex machine power tools.
